Calculating Scale
Figuring out the scale of a miniature when it's not readily apparent might be a little trickier than you think.
Big Thunder Flag Stop
Just because the layout's torn apart doesn't mean I can't build some structures for it! Join me for this little project, building a passenger shelter/flag stop for the Big Thunder area on my On30 Thunder Mesa Mining Company layout.
Building Coyote Canyon
It's time to build some new scenery for the Thunder Mesa layout! Picking up where we left off last time, I build the rocky scenery for Coyote Canyon out of polystyrene insulation foam (XPF), using techniques honed on the Bandit canyon and Gruesome Gulch projects.
Farewell to Gruesome Gulch
It's time to bid a fond farewell to the On30 Gruesome Gulch Railroad; my spooky ghost train themed project from 2022-23. The intent was always to sell the layout and it will soon be on its way to the home of a private collector out of state.
Back to the Beginning
Join me as I take the Thunder Mesa layout back to its nearly original 3x6' footprint in this FINAL phase of demolition for the reimagined layout.
You Can Do Whatever You Want
Here's the ultimate secret of model railroading: You can do whatever you want! You make your own rules!
2024 Mini Festa Fiesta!
The annual Mini Festa Fiesta is an invitation only event where a group of incredibly creative model makers share their mini-layouts, dioramas, and latest creations.
Finishing the On18 Bandit Canyon Railway
It's the the final week of work sessions as I wrap up the On18 Bandit Canyon Railway!
Showdown at Hole in the Wall
Join me as I create a custom soundtrack, paint a passel of outlaw figures, and install a budget friendly MP3 player with pushbutton playback to bring this Wild West gunfight to life.
Bridges & Waterholes
Follow along as I finish Bandit Canyon with desert waterholes modeled with epoxy resin, add a mine car track and dump trestle to the mine tunnel, and build a spindly wooden trestle/truss bridge to span the canyon itself.
Building the Canyon
It's time to put the canyon into the On18 Bandit Canyon Railway! This week, I sculpt a mountain of pink polystyrene foam insulation into a deep, serpentine Southwestern canyon.
Realistic Sound for the Bandit Canyon Ry
I'm getting the layout ready for an upcoming open house in June, and this week, I'm adding an ambient sound system from Pricom Designs and Fantasonics Engineering! Follow along step by step I install the Pricom Dream Player Lite and build a pair of custom speaker mounts.
Cork Roads and Grade Crossings
This week I’m laying the foundation for some roads, grade crossings, and structure pads with inexpensive sheet cork from the local office supply store.
Roadbed, Track & Wiring
Let's lay some track and get some trains running on the On30 Goldfield & Calico!
Wandering Spruce Water Tank
This week, I'm finishing up a Banta Model Works Short Line Water Tank for the Wandering Spruce Railroad. The WS is an awesome On30 logging line being built by fellow modelers Kevin Spady and Sean Williams.
Natural Arch Bridge
Join me as I create a natural arch bridge for the On18 Bandit Canyon Railway - just like the real red sandstone spans we find here in the American Southwest (but usually without trains on them!)
Installing an NCE Powercab DCC System
I'm installing an NCE Powercab DCC control system on the On30 Goldfield & Calico layout. "DCC" stands for "digital command control" and the NCE Powercab is a great way to get started with this kind of system.
Benchwork for the On30 Goldfield & Calico
Time to get started on the On30 Goldfield & Calico layout! This week, I'm building a sturdy, portable stand and box girder style benchwork for the new section of the layout.
Geyser Gulch Refurb
For this week's Workbench Wednesday vlog I refurb one of the most popular scenes on the Thunder Mesa layout, Geyser Gulch.
Thunder Mesa Plan Update
Some exciting changes to the Thunder Mesa Mining Company track plan!
